About Much Love
Much Love is a non-profit project with net proceeds going to Compassion Canada’s Child Survival Program (CSP). My name is Sheila and my intention is to raise awareness for the amazing work of Compassion and to raise funds specifically for the CSP. My inspiration was to use my life long passion for sewing as a way to create a meaningful gift - initially a soft flannel swaddling blanket with a hand embroidered blessing. The recipient of the blanket tenderly wraps their new baby in Love, Hope, Peace and Joy, and the proceeds benefit another new baby in the developing world – a baby whose parents have the same hopes and dreams for their child as we do in Canada. A cozy addition to the swaddling blanket has been the hand knitted “top knot” hat. I sincerely thank my friend Faye for helping with knitting these cute hats! Welcome Cheryl to the knitting team - you are so appreciated!
My focus has turned to hand made quilts. I have returned to quilting after several years away from it and I can’t tell you how exciting it is today to choose fabrics and quilt designs! I so enjoy seeing my happy customers take away a beautiful creation knowing that they are also really helping a family that struggles to meet basic needs.
I will make a quilt “to order” or you can choose one that is ready to go at a Much Love Trunk Show. All quilts are nap sized no matter your age! I try to make quilts that are colourful, very usable, and affordable. Donations go toward investing in an impoverished family in the developing world. Currently donations are going to CSP’s in Nicaragua , as the need is great there.
I first sponsored a child through Compassion in 2010. I enjoy writing and receiving letters and knowing that the small donation I make every month is providing important improvements in the life of my sponsored child. I consider it a privilege to be able to speak hope and encouragement into the life of a child. For me it has been a huge part of my spiritual journey to realize that the love that I can show to another stems from the love that He first has given so freely to me. (1John 4:19).
In 2013 I was able to arrange an individual visit while travelling in Peru with my sponsored child Mildre and her family as well as spend time at the Compassion Child Development Centre at the local church where Mildre is loved, nurtured, tutored, and developed. I still tell Mildre in my letters that it was the best day of my life! The staff and volunteers were so proud to show the after school curriculum, the classrooms and kitchen where the volunteers cook for the children. The love and dedication the church staff and volunteers have for the children was very evident. I was particularly moved when I met a young man who was a former sponsored child that now comes back to the project to tutor the children. You can’t put a price on the precious relationship that is established through letter writing and of course a visit to a sponsored child.
After returning home from the visit with Mildre and spending some time educating myself about poverty and social justice issues I decided to join the Compassion Volunteer Network. I really enjoy leading others to child sponsorship and sharing in my small way with this great work.
In October 2015 I participated in a sponsor exposure trip to Nicaragua where I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting another sponsored child, Pedro. During this trip we met dedicated in-country Compassion staff and visited several small local churches that administer the Child Sponsorship Program and one church that administers a Child Survival Program. What I was most impressed by on this trip were the Pastors and the church staff that lovingly and tirelessly care for huge numbers of children and families in their communities. The needs are so great in their communities, but with the backing of sponsors they are doing the work and changing the outcome for a generation of children. Nicaragua is an amazing and beautiful country and I have great hope for the generation being supported through the Compassion projects.
How can you help?
I will be hosting Trunk Shows at my home or alternate locations throughout the year to showcase quilts that I have already made and provide an opportunity to view styles and colours for inspiration. Trunk Shows will also provide resources about Compassion. Contact me if you wish to be on the mailing list for Trunk Shows.
